The Painter at the Drive-Thru

This is a work of fiction that is based on true events. This story contains mention of heavy content material.

A man wearing a golf cap and a Starry Night mask pulled up to the drive-thru at Carley’s one morning.

There are 2 directions from Carley’s: there is Towards Civilization (east), and there is Towards Wilderness (west).

He handed me cash. I handed him change. In a fleeting minute before his coffee arrived on the table, I said, “I was at an art museum few months ago, and I saw Starry Night there. But, there were all these people crowded around it taking pictures. It wasn’t the same, I kind of wanted to experience the painting all to myself.”

He replied, “I’m an artist. I’ve been a painter for a long time. Van Gogh was a very troubled man, and a genius.”

“If only he had stayed alive,” I said. “Then he could’ve known how influential he became.” There is evidence that Van Gogh’s death may have been a murder instead of a suicide. But, I knew that I was rushed for time and the topic was too heavy to breach.

The man pointed upwards and looked towards the sky. “He knows, out there, he knows.” I handed him his coffee, we said farewell, and he drove off.
